A winter scene in Hokkaido. I trekked here in snowshoes with a local guide. Winter trekking can be hazardous due to the threat of falling through the many metres-thick snow into hidden thermal streams and becoming trapped. People are often lost in this region this way.

Visibility was low, and as we emerged over a ridgeline I was greeted by this serene view of a forest end to end. A case of life imitating art it reminded me at the time of a stage set.
